Field Note No. 11
The High Chair Era
A new phase of island life has begun: The High Chair.
This is where the youngest inhabitant begins sampling local cuisine.
Early findings:
Bananas - unacceptable.
Sweet potatoes - excellent. Five stars. Would recommend.
The process itself is…spirited.
Pureed vegetables are flung with surprising force and impressive range. The kitchen floor bears the brunt of it. So do my cheeks, my shirt, and occasionally my hair.
Somewhere between the spoon and her mouth, the food becomes less of a meal and more of a collaborative art installation.
Still, I consider today’s mission a success.
She tasted.
She laughed.
And the floor, much like her mother, now wears the evidences proudly.
